Biomedical Sciences Pathway
Biomedical Sciences Pathway
The Biomedical Sciences Pathway, supported by Project Lead the Way, is recognized by the UC and CSU systems as meeting the "D" Science requirement. Students in this pathway explore careers in biomedical sciences through a project-based curriculum that integrates core subjects. The program offers "real-world" experiences, such as guest speakers, field trips, and internships. Pathway teachers collaborate closely to support and ensure the academic success of their students.
Courses include:
Principles of Biomedical Sciences: (9th grade) - This introductory course in the Project Lead the Way (PLTW) Biomedical Sciences Pathway explores human body systems and health conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, sickle cell disease, hypercholesterolemia, and infectious diseases. It provides an overview of the Biomedical Sciences program and establishes a scientific foundation for future courses.
Human Body Systems: (10th grade) - Students explore body system interactions by examining identity, communication, movement, and homeostasis. They design and conduct experiments, investigate human anatomy, and use software to monitor functions such as muscle movement, reflexes, and respiration.
Medical Interventions: (11th grade) - Students explore a range of interventions for disease prevention, diagnosis, and treatment by following a fictitious family. The course covers maintaining health and homeostasis through topics such as infection prevention, DNA screening, cancer management, and organ failure. Students learn about various medical interventions, including immunology, surgery, genetics, pharmacology, medical devices, and diagnostics. Emphasis is placed on lifestyle choices, preventive measures, and the role of scientific thinking and engineering in developing future medical interventions.
Capstone Course Biomedical innovations: (12th grade) - Students apply their prior knowledge to develop innovative solutions for contemporary health challenges. They explore topics such as public health, biomedical engineering, clinical medicine, and physiology, culminating in the design and presentation of a research project.
