Parent Newsletter

1/17/2025

Dear HHS Families,

As we wrap up the semester, I want to take a moment to thank you for your unwavering support in helping our students navigate their academic journey, especially during finals. Your encouragement and dedication play a significant role in their success, and we are so grateful for your partnership.

With the new semester upon us, students are presented with a clean slate—a fresh opportunity to excel and achieve their goals. It’s an ideal time to set new priorities, establish positive habits, and strive for success.

Looking ahead, program planning for next year’s classes will soon be underway. I encourage you to have conversations with your student about exploring pathways and programs available at HHS that may be new to them, such as AP courses, BioMed, VAPA (Visual and Performing Arts), Puente, AVID, Engineering, Career Training/ROP, and Sports Medicine. These programs offer exciting opportunities for students to discover their passions and build skills for the future.

We also invite you to become more involved in our school community. There are many ways to engage, from joining campus groups like ELAC, “On the Farm” meetings, district AASAI and AAPI meetings, SSC, or Band Boosters, to serving as a parent ambassador for HHS. Your voice and participation are invaluable in shaping our school’s culture and vision. If you’re interested, please reach out to Avi Gandhi, our Family Engagement Specialist to learn more.

Attendance remains a key factor in student success. Getting students into their seats is the first step toward achieving their academic potential. By working together to prioritize regular attendance, we can help our students thrive. If you haven’t already, please sign up for Infinite Campus to monitor your student’s attendance and grades in real time. This is an excellent tool for staying connected and supporting your child’s progress.

Thank you again for your support and partnership. We look forward to working together to make this semester a successful one for all HHS students!

11/6/24

As we begin Quarter 2, we would like to take this opportunity to emphasize the importance of attendance and academic performance for your student’s success. Regular attendance and consistent academic effort are key factors in achieving positive outcomes both in the classroom and beyond.

Attendance Matters: Consistent attendance plays a critical role in a student’s ability to grasp course material, participate in class discussions, and maintain a strong academic standing. When students miss school, they may fall behind, making it difficult to catch up on assignments and important lessons. Research shows a direct correlation between regular attendance and higher academic achievement.

We encourage you to review your student’s attendance regularly and communicate with the school if any challenges arise. We are here to support you and ensure that your student has every opportunity to succeed.

Academic Performance: Grades earned throughout the quarter provide a snapshot of how well students are progressing in their courses. With Quarter 1 ending, now is the perfect time for students to review their grades and address any areas needing improvement. This quarter’s grades will contribute to their overall academic record, which is especially important for high school students planning their future educational or career paths.

Please encourage your student to:

  • Complete all assignments on time
  • Seek help from teachers or school staff when needed
  • Participate actively in class
  • Take advantage of tutoring or other academic support programs if offered
  • Ask teachers about our “Get it Done” Saturday Extended Learning sessions if they are struggling to keep up

Opportunities for Parent Engagement: At HHS, we believe that parental involvement is key to creating a strong and supportive school community. We encourage you to get involved and share your input through the following parent meetings and organizations:

  • "On the Farm" Parent Meetings: A great opportunity to stay informed about school events, academic programs, and initiatives at HHS.
  • District African American Student Achievement Initiative (AASAI) Meetings: These meetings focus on addressing the needs and enhancing the success of African American students.
  • School Site Council (SSC): A group of parents, students, and staff who collaborate to develop and monitor the School Plan for Student Achievement.
  • English Learner Advisory Committee (ELAC): Provides parents of English Learners the chance to advise on programs and services for students learning English.
  • Band Boosters: An organization supporting the music and band program at HHS, where parents can contribute to the enrichment of our arts programs.
  • District Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Meetings: Meetings dedicated to the support and achievement of AAPI students within our district.

Your input and participation in these meetings and groups are invaluable in shaping the future of our school and district. By attending these events, you can help ensure that all students, including your own, receive the support and resources they need to thrive.

We appreciate the role you play in your child’s education and in our school community. Your involvement helps us ensure that every student reaches their full potential. As we approach the end of the first quarter, let’s continue working together to support regular attendance, academic success, and a strong partnership between home and school.

If you have any questions or would like more information on how to get involved, please feel free to contact us.

Thank you for your continued support and engagement.

Welcome Back, Parents and Guardians!

We are thrilled to announce that we have successfully completed our first full week of the school year at Hayward High School! As we embark on this journey together, we want to extend our warmest greetings and express our commitment to making this year a successful and enriching experience for all. Here are a few important things to know as we continue into the school year:

Student Schedules:
As we work diligently to balance classes, student schedules are still being finalized. We appreciate your understanding and patience during this process. Please know that our top priority is ensuring that every student is placed in the best possible learning environment. However, please be aware that classes may change during this process.

Health and Safety Measures:
The health and safety of our students and staff remain a top priority. To ensure the highest level of protection for everyone on campus, only N95 masks will be permitted. If your child needs a mask, they can visit the main office or the CSO’s desk at the front of the school to receive one. We appreciate your cooperation in helping us maintain a safe school environment.

Dress Code Reminder:
We want to remind parents and students of the importance of adhering to our dress code. The California Administrative Code, Title 5, Section 302, states:

“A pupil who goes to school without proper attention having been given to personal cleanliness or neatness of dress may be sent home to be properly prepared for school, or shall be required to prepare him/herself for the school room before entering.”

Students who are inappropriately dressed will be referred to the office. Parents or guardians will be contacted to bring a change of clothes. Refusal to comply with administration or repeated offenses will result in the student being sent home suspended.

The following clothing is not appropriate for school or school-sponsored activities and should not be worn:

  • Flip flops, slippers, and bare feet. Shoes must be worn at all times for safety reasons.

  • Head coverings such as hairnets, wave rags/caps, and similar grooming headwear are not allowed. Exceptions will be made for students whose religious practices require head covering. Sunglasses may be worn to P.E. only with a doctor’s note.

  • ALL bandanas of any color are prohibited.

  • Sagging pants are not allowed, and underwear may not be visible.

  • Clothes must be sufficient to conceal undergarments at all times. See-through or fishnet fabrics, halter tops, off-the-shoulder or low-cut tops, bare midriffs, strapless shirts and dresses, and skirts or shorts shorter than mid-thigh are prohibited. Ripped jeans showing an inappropriate amount of bare skin are also prohibited.

  • Pajamas and house slippers are not acceptable school attire (except during Spirit Week!).

  • Shoulder straps must be at least 1 ½ inches in width (4 cm).

  • Clothing and backpacks that display or imply weapons, gambling, gang, drug/alcohol/tobacco use, criminal activity, profane or obscene words and phrases, or sexually explicit comments or symbols are not allowed. This includes brands such as Backwoods and Cookies.

Drop-Off and Pick-Up Protocol:
To ensure the safety of all students, we ask that parents and guardians exercise courtesy and caution during drop-off and pick-up times. Please be aware that the Hayward Police Department (HPD) will be actively monitoring traffic, and tickets will be issued for violations. Your careful attention in the parking areas is greatly appreciated.

"Down on the Farm with the Principal":
We are excited to announce our upcoming event, "Down on the Farm with the Principal." This will be a fantastic opportunity for parents to provide input, ask questions, and engage in meaningful conversations with the school administration. We encourage you to attend and share your thoughts as we work together to make this school year the best it can be. We will be starting this on September 19th, so please look out for more information to come.

Thank you for your continued support and partnership. We look forward to a fantastic school year ahead and to working closely with you to ensure your child's success.

Sincerely,
Waylon Miller
