Testing for College

Important SAT/ACT Update

The CSU and UC systems are no longer using the SAT or ACT for admissions.

As for private colleges, most are "test-optional" while a small number still require SAT or ACT.

The HHS school code is 051150.  
You will need this code when you register for the SAT and ACT on line.

Test-Specific Details

Preliminary SAT (PSAT)

Who takes it: all college-bound Sophomores and Juniors
Why: to prepare for the SAT, Juniors can qualify for the National Merit Scholar Program

SAT & SAT Subject Tests

Who takes it: students applying to four-year universities
Note: SAT Subject Tests are only required for some private schools and recommended for some majors at UCs.
Why: required for admission to any four-year university (the ACT may be used en lieu of the SAT)
When: anytime before November of your Senior year and as many times as you'd like (only your top scores get used)
How to pass: there is no "passing score"  but scores are used to compare applicants for admission and are also combined with GPA to determine eligibility for the CSU eligibility index and the UC scholarship requirement.

Test Prep: Khan Academy, McGraw Hill, Princeton Review, Number2.com; borrow test prep book from College & Career Center or Hayward Public Library

ACT

CSU Early Assessment Program ESSAY (EAP)

Who takes it: all Juniors
Why: supplemental EAP essay results are combined with Junior CST/STAR scores to determine readiness for college-level English & Math at CSU
How to pass: please see website above, if a student does not pass either part of the EAP, there are other opportunities (see link above) to waive out of remediation as a Freshman at a CSU.
 

Chabot College Assessment

Who takes it: all students taking an English and/or Math class at Chabot 
Why: to determine at which level class a student will start (high school transcripts are not used for this purpose, only this assessment test)
Hot to pass: there is no passing score per se, but certain scores are needed for each level of Chabot Math and English  Advanced Placement (AP) Exams

Who takes it: all students in AP courses, must pay and register in Feb/March
Why: expected by colleges and high school, students who pass the AP exam usually receive college credit
How to pass: score of 3 or higher
